Local movie maker's film wins at festival

Director D.J. Summitt's short film, "Clarinet," won the El Sol award for Best Video at the Baja California International Film Festival recently.

Summitt, a Lexington native, was on hand at the Center for Culture in Tijuana, Mexico, to accept the award.

"Clarinet" is Summitt's second film. His first, "Doomed to Failure," will be released on DVD by Troma Entertainment in December. "Clarinet" is also his first film with longtime friend Zac Hayes. The two met Central Davidson High School, where they began writing scripts and studying films. Hayes lives in Lexington, where he is working on writing the duo's next feature film.

"Clarinet" is an introspective piece about a man who, after the theft of his clarinet, allies himself with a world of nihilism and angst.

After graduation from film school, Summitt moved to San Diego to pursue his film career. He is preparing to shoot his next film; a horror trilogy, titled "The Manhattan Love Suicides."
