January 26th -- I am sitting here at the
Troma condo with the smell of burning wood all around me. The
Troma condo, my home for the next few days, is a gigantic ski chalet
that quickly conveys the idea that when Troma travels they don't mess
around.
So my flight left Raleigh at 6:00 am. I arrived in Salt Lake City,
via Houston, around 1:00pm local time. I caught the shuttle and
was dropped off in front the Slamdance HQ on Main Street. I began
flyering the place. Doomed to Failure fliers went
everywhere...everywhere that fliers can legally go at least.
Fliers in Park City are only allowed on kiosks and in private business
windows (with approval of course). Rod, director of Tromadance,
told me handing out fliers to people on the street is a big no-no as is
putting fliers on anything other than kiosks.
After a few hours of work I met up with some Tromadance volunteers
who directed me to lots of free food, drink, and swag. They were
very cool. I gave them shirts and
buttons. Then I fliered for a few more hours, only stopping to get
the free food at the NY Film Commission flat. At 4 pm Lloyd
Kaufmann was having a book signing at Dolly's Bookstore on Main Street.
Dolly's is a nice, cozy, quaint venue for something like this.
There I met Troma fans and filmmakers from Iowa, Alabama, Vermont,
California, Nevada, Maryland, Minnesota (the same small town as my
sister coincidentally), and New York. I also me the filmmakers of
the film before mine,
Dinner Time.
Lloyd spoke about his books and about filmmaking. He entertained
questions from the audience about filmmaking and about Tromadance.
As a participating filmmaker I was asked to speak about "Doomed to Failure."
I answered a few questions and encouraged people to come out and check
it out. Lloyd was a nice guy who seems to
really have an understanding for the underground indie filmmaker.
He signed my copy of
All I Need to Know About Filmmaking I Learned From the Toxic
Avenger and posed for a picture
with me. Then back to flyering. At about 10:00 pm I grew
weary and staggered here, to the condo. Here we watched a film
made by someone staying with us. It was good but I was too
tired to completely follow. Most people are asleep now. I am
here in my room dying of exhaustion. This is one of the best
feelings ever.
